About Us

Vickers Barrow Motor Club was formed in 1959 by a group of car enthusiasts working at Vickers Armstrong Shipyard in Barrow-in Furness. Over the years the club developed from doing simple social runs and outings, to what are our mainstay events these days: 12-Car Navigational Events, Touring Assemblies, Gymkhanas, Autotests and PCT's. Marshalling is another strong activity that the Club is involved in. We have been given many awards and praise over the years for our efforts and efficiency, particularly for the stages we ran in Grizedale Forest on the RAC Rallies of the 1970's and 1980's.

The area we use for our events is predominately Ordnance Survey 1:50,000 Scale Sheet 96 which includes many classic Lakeland roads made infamous by Motoring News Championship rounds such as the Towers Leck and R.L Brown. We meet socially on the second Monday of every month at the Farmers Arms in the small village of Newton-in-Furness.
We also offer members discounts from local traders and run spectator trips to bigger events. The club is affiliated to the RAC MSA, Cumbria Motor Sport Group (CMSG) and The Association of North Eastern & Cumbria Car Clubs (ANECCC)

Clubs 50th Anniversary - November 2009 - Club Calendar - PICTURES NEEDED

From November 2009 VBMC will celebrate its 50th Anniversary. To mark this historic occasion we intend on creating Car Stickers and a Desktop Calendar from November 2009 to December 2010. We are exploring other possible ways too, and would be glad to hear from anyone with any good ideas.

Dave Winder has kindly agreed to co-ordinate the venture but to help produce the calendar we need pictures. We want to include as many pictures of members both past and present and their cars on motorsport events of all kinds over the years. If anyone from the club has any pictures of any kind that they think fits the criteria then please get e-mail the webmaster, Chris Williams on webmaster@vbmc.co.uk

They can be prints, digital or slides, even photocopies - and from anytime from 1959 to the present day. After the images have been used they will all be returned.

Annual Dinner & Presentation of Awards - 21st November 2009

This year's Annual Dinner and prize presentation will take place on Friday 21st November 2009, once again at 'The Coot on the Tarn' restaurant where last year the food and surroundings were excellent. W have chosen to have the carvery once again where you can choose how much food you actually what and the price remains as last year £16 per person.

After dinner and the awards presentation we will again have a guest speaker . A man who I'm sure will delight us all with his tales and stories from his rallying expeditions from around the world.

To save people having to drive or organis taxis, we will hopefully providing a bus from Walney/Barrow and back again. It will be able to pick up and drop off at various points enroute but will need to have a rough idea of how many people require this as it needs to be confirmed

For those of you who attended last year, we're sure you'll agree what a good night out and what an excellent value we had and for those of you who never, why not give it a go?! Everyone is very welcome. Please make a date in your diary. Please reserve your tickets with Christine Winder.
